Renamed as The Tom Stoppard Theatre, in September 2026 to honour writer Sir Tom Stoppard after previously opening in 1892 as the Trafalgar Square Theatre, before becoming the Duke Of York’s Theatre in 1895.

Since then, the theatre has played host to a multitude of acclaimed productions and actors; from a 14 year-old Charlie Chaplin’s only West End appearance in Sherlock Holmes in 1905, Embers, which starred Jeremy Irons. Most recently, the theatre opened its doors to acclaimed productions such as Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke and Ibsen’s classic, Rosmersholm. Tom Holland starring in Jamie Lloyd’s production of Romeo and Juliet, Tony Award winning Stereophonic and most recently the West End transfer of the Old Vic's production of Arcadia.
